The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Bureau of Business Research has published its ranking of the most inventive states in the U.S. for 2011, and Vermont is at top of the list – likely a surprise to those in Silicon Valley.
But the rankings aren’t based on totals, but rather on the number of patents per thousand residents. California and Massachusetts ranked highly at 3rd and 2nd, respectively. But Vermont beat out both these tech bellwethers with 3.51 patents per 1,000 residents. The state hosts a large IBM plant as well as the University of Vermont, two sources of much of the patent activity.
Minnesota, host of the 3M company, took 4th place, and Washington, home of Microsoft, took 5th. Some states ranked outside the top 10 despite their reputation for tech activity, such as Texas (21st) and North Carolina (22nd). At the bottom of the list were Alaska (50th), Mississippi (49th), and West Virginia (48th). To view the full report, click here.
