With proper synergy “the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts.” In the world of tech transfer, a growing number of institutions are creating valuable “IP bundles” out of related technologies which, as separate “parts,” have limited commercial appeal.

Virtually every tech transfer office has them — the stacks of “orphaned” inventions and incremental technology improvements that remain untapped and unlicensed. In fact, at least 70% of university patents never find a commercial home. Unlocking even a portion of that potential can bring your TTO millions in new licensing revenues, generate a load of goodwill from researchers, and bring society the benefit of these innovations..

That’s where IP bundling comes in. Package related IP together — from within your institution and even across institutions — to create a marketable “whole” with newfound attractiveness to corporations and investors. But putting those bundles together successfully is tricky and introduces a host of unfamiliar challenges you’ll need to address.

To help you tap into the “bundle” treasures awaiting in your IP portfolio, we’ve arranged for you to spend 90 minutes consulting with two tech transfer experts who’ve pioneered successful bundling efforts. They will share their experiences, key strategies, and lessons learned so you can adapt these in your own organization.

“IP Bundling: Create Higher Value and More Licensing Opportunities”

In this practical, strategy-filled session — produced by Technology Transfer Tactics monthly newsletter — you’ll learn how to find and create high-value IP bundles out of existing but untapped innovations. Plus, you’ll discover the critical lessons learned in ongoing bundling efforts so you can avoid common mistakes, smooth the licensing process, and come away with a blueprint for developing and marketing IP collections and platforms that bring new commercial life to previously undeveloped inventions. You’ll come away with dozens of usable ideas and tactics you can implement in your organization, and bring in “found money” from files that have been gathering dust.

Get on the IP bundling bandwagon!

In this interactive session, you’ll learn from two tech transfer veterans who’ve already successfully developed IP bundles, and whose experiences will give you real-world insight and how-to guidance as you plan your own bundling initiative.

We’ll cover:

  • Getting started: Cataloguing your unlicensed IP and identifying potential bundles;
  • Overcoming common roadblocks and avoiding pitfalls;
  • Valuation of the bundle and its components;
  • Revenue distribution;
  • Cross-institution bundling;
  • Contractual issues and challenges;
  • Creating standardized agreements;
  • Advantages for the university and the licensee;
  • Overcoming researcher objections;
  • Finding the right licensee;
  • and much, much more!
