The University of Virginia invites nominations and applications for the position of Executive Director of the University of Virginia Patent Foundation (UVAPF).
The University of Virginia (UVA) is seeking a dynamic, creative and innovative individual to lead the UVAPF. The University is dedicated to transforming its technology transfer process by focusing more broadly on innovation, partnerships and commercialization as a means for these new ideas and products to have the greatest positive impact on society. Reporting to the Board of the UVAPF and via a dotted line to the Executive Director and Associate Vice President for Innovation Partnerships and Commercialization, the Executive Director will play a pivotal role in the transformation, and will be central to the development and execution of a robust strategy for innovation and intellectual property at the University.
Although the University will consider a range of profiles, expressions of interest are sought from candidates possessing the following:
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in science, business-based discipline and/or law is preferred; masters degree with significant relevant experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree;
- Thorough understanding of technology transfer and its complexities in an academic institution;
- Ability to value early stage technology, to develop marketing strategy and to negotiate good business agreements;
- Experience in the corporate and venture worlds in deal-making and knowledge of the needs in the marketplace;
- Exceptional ability to communicate with individuals at all levels within the organization, as well as with external board members, university leaders and industry partners;
- Demonstrated capacity for establishing strong staff development, mentoring, internship, and related initiatives designed to enhance the breadth and depth of technology transfer and business development experience available for the university’s innovation management initiatives;
- History of serving as a distinguished professional and team player with a strong track record in management, negotiation, entrepreneurship, corporate in-licensing, venture funding and/or due diligence experience for technology or biosciences ventures;
- Strong knowledge of patent law and technology licensing and commercialization, including direct experience in drafting and negotiating intellectual property contracts
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant experience in university research;
- Working knowledge of venture capital and angel financing, policies/issues relevant to starting companies based on University research;
- Administrative experience in industry or in the management of research programs or corporate relations

The University of Iowa Research Foundation (UIRF) seeks a highly motivated professional to serve as a Licensing Associate. This position is responsible for evaluating and managing incoming leads, and for proactively seeking new business opportunities in the University of Iowa (UI) portfolio of inventions, technologies, and discoveries. The Licensing Associate is expected to identify opportunities, craft licensing strategies, and execute on those strategies. Responsibilities include identifying and evaluating new inventions, particularly in the fields of human life sciences, engineering, physical sciences, or software; determining and managing the IP management strategy; developing the licensing strategy; developing the business opportunity and marketing new inventions to prospective licensees; negotiating terms of appropriate transactions; closing deals; and working with UI startup companies. The incumbent should have the desire to be in a highly collegial and team oriented environment.
The primary objective of UIRF is to commercialize selected technologies developed by the UI for the purposes of serving the greater public good and for creating community and regional vitality. Commercialization is achieved either by licensing enabling technologies to existing companies or through the creation of startup companies for disruptive or paradigm-shifting technologies. UIRF manages, markets, and licenses UI inventions and the subsequent revenue stream as a not-for-profit corporation under the UI Vice President for Research. UIRF works closely with all UI inventors and advises the Division of Sponsored Programs and Clinical Trials Office staff on intellectual property and contract issues.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or in a business related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Reasonable (1-3 years) administrative and program experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills.
- High capacity for managing multiple and complex business development projects.
- Must be proficient in computer software applications.
- A demonstrated ability to manage simultaneously time-sensitive competing projects.
Desirable Qualifications:
- An aptitude for research and investigation and how it relates to opportunities for technology transfer
- Ad advanced degree including an MBA, J.D., Masters of Science or PhD
- Experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Market research and analysis
- Product development and marketing
- Intellectual property management
- Project management
- Contracts and negotiations

This position may be filled as a Licensing Associate based on experience and qualifications.

The Office of Technology Management (OTM) at the University of Illinois in Chicago is seeking applicants for the position of Technology Transfer Coordinator. The successful candidate provides the highest quality professional expertise and leadership across the spectrum of technology management or within a particular set of technology management and marketing professional services. The services include supervision of all personnel that research and analyze the commercialization potential of technologies developed by employees and contractors to the University of Illinois, and such third parties as are approved by the OTM and also maintenance of a comprehensive intellectual property portfolio in various stages of evaluation.
Duties:
- Coordinate inter-campus efforts between the OTMs to maintain integrated and knowledge based databases of technologies, marketing information, and other business-related information to provide standardized services for both campuses.
- Responsible and accountable for research and analysis for a portfolio of technologies (intellectual property developed by UIC employees and contractors), and approved third parties, more specifically: all screening for initial marketability performed by OTM personnel; commercial assessments (including patent landscape analysis, citation analysis and analysis of potential market, competitors and names of researchers working in similar areas); and creating and supervising presentations and reports reflecting research.
- Coordinate and lead internal and external communications on behalf of the OTMs.
- Supervise OTM research and screening personnel (currently a staff of 6 part time employees including Business Analyst I’s).
- Responsible for coordinating the OTM research intern program including the identification and hiring of interns for the office.
- Test, select, learn and train for all databases used in the course of performing research services for the OTM.
- Assist technology managers in the marketing presentations based on research services.
- Coordinate and maintain the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool to support smooth operation of the office in the following aspects: operational work flow, projects deadlines, internal and external contacts, marketing efforts, as well as general records management and reports.9. Responsible for implementing and maintaining effective communication between participants in the research process, including researchers, faculty and technology managers.
- Assist in development, sales and management of the delivery of professional screening services to outside entities.
- Maintain a productive relationship with faculty and inventors to ensure positive feedback and engagement.
- Provide information to identify and develop relationships with strategic partners and companies interested in technology transfer and related sponsored research.
- Participate in development and improvement of OTM infrastructure, policy and procedure, including the development of annual objectives, goals, priorities and productivity benchmarks specific to research services.
- Develop and deliver presentations to UIC, third parties and conferences regarding the UIC research services.
Qualifications:
Qualifications include: Bachelor’s degree in science, business or related area with a minimum of two years of intellectual property related experience in data mining; Master’s of Business Administration preferred. Other required qualifications include: excellent written and oral communication skills; the ability to work independently and in a team situation; be able to identify and assess value of intellectual property; ability to maintain confidential information; knowledge about sponsor guidelines/regulations; strong interpersonal skills to develop/maintain effective working relationships; demonstrated managerial skills to work independently and to exercise good judgment and discretion in handling personnel issues; effective teamwork skills to address/resolve problems; demonstrated organizational and multi-tasking capability to produce work in a fast-paced environment that imposes stringent deadlines and requires flexibility to handle urgent matters; and proficiency with Microsoft computer programs/applications. Strong scientific or technical knowledge preferred. Some travel can be expected including but not limited to intercampus trips.

This position is responsible for developing and managing the technology development strategy for EMD Bioscience business in concert with and under the direction of the Director of Business Development and Licensing. This position is responsible for technology in-licensing and out-licensing for EMD Biosciences. This position performs complex specialized intellectual property licensing work on all areas of the Bioscience market and develops a strong “innovative science” image of the company through collaboration with high level global research institutes, pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Identifies, presents, and evaluates technical, market and financial aspects of a technology opportunity in conjunction with the R&D and Product Management groups. Acts as primary contact and negotiates licensing terms with external parties. Works with legal to develop contract and negotiate deals and partnerships to accomplish the corporate strategy.
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Make significant contributions to the Bioscience strategy for innovative technologies to develop into solutions for our customers and contribute to the bioscience growth.
- Scout for technologies that support the bioscience strategy.
- Identify, present to the organization, and coordinate the in-licensing of technologies.
- Identify and evaluate bioscience companies for acquisition targets.
- Act as primary contact with potential licensors.
- Develop and negotiate Confidential Disclosure Agreements (CDA) and Material Transfer Agreements (MTA).
- Licensing contracts and collaboration agreements.
- Work with internal resources (Product Management, R&D, and Legal) to develop business models to support investment in technologies and licenses.
- Manage EMD’s scientific advisory board for the bioscience business.
- Work with Product Management and R&D to evaluate commercial potential of relevant technologies by defining markets, market size, competing technologies, etc. and new markets for growth.
- Have a strong understanding of intellectual property and provide primary assessment of such.
- Work with the Legal Department to evaluate the intellectual property status of technologies under consideration for licensing.
- Utilize and update contact database for all opportunities identified and evaluated.
- Act as a liaison between EMD Biosciences and Merck KGaA, Darmstadt business development, R&D and Corporate acquisition team.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Proteomics or related field is required. MBA preferred. At least 7 years experience in technology assessment and product development. Experience in the business aspect of life science company, research and development and commercialization. Experience in negotiation of licensing technology deals and acquisition target evaluations.
